Shepherd’s Pie Recipe: A Traditional Hearty Dish

Shepherd’s Pie is a traditional British dish that is made of a savory filling of minced meat, typically 
lamb, topped with a creamy layer of mashed potatoes. Originally created to use leftover meat, it 
has evolved over time, with many variations incorporating different types of meat and vegetables. A 
hearty dish with rich and comforting flavors, it is sure to please everyone at the table.

Ingredients
Meat Filling:
  • Cooking oil 2 tbsp (30 ml)
  • Ground pork 250 g
  • Ground beef 250 g
  • Onion, diced (large) 1 pc (60 g)
  • Oregano 1/2 tsp
  • worcestershire 2 tbsp (30 ml)
  • MAGGI® Beef Stock 1 tbsp (10 g)
  • Black pepper 1/2 tsp
  • BUITONI® Coulis de Tomate 1/4 cup (65 g)
Vegetable Filling:
  • Butter 1 tbsp (14 g)
  • Garlic, minced 1 tbsp (9 g)
  • Carrot, diced, blanched 3/4 cup (96 g)
  • Corn kernels 3/4 cup (130 g)
  • Green beans, diced, blanched 3/4 cup (112 g)
Potato Layer:
  • Prepared mashed potato 1000 g
Cheese Sauce:
  • NESTLÉ® All Purpose Cream 1 cup (250 g)
  • NESTLÉ® Fresh Milk 1 cup (250 g)
  • Cheese, grated 3 cups (340 g)
Preparation

    Prepare the Meat Filling. In a medium pot with cover, heat cooking oil. Brown the ground pork and beef. When the meat is no longer pink, around 3 minutes, stir in the onions, thyme, and oregano. Cook until onions are translucent, around 2 minutes. Season with worcestershire, MAGGI® Beef Stock, and pepper. Cover the pan and cook meats over low heat for 20-30 minutes or until are very tender. Lastly, add the BUITONI® Coulis de Tomate. Cook for another 5 minutes. Set aside.

    Prepare the Vegetable Filling. In a saute pan, melt butter and saute the garlic. Stir in the carrots, corn, and green beans. Set aside.

    Prepare the Mashed Potato Layer. Boil water in a pot. When boiling, turn off heat and add the MAGGI® Mashed Potato Complete Mix using a whisk. When smooth, return to low heat and continue to cook and stir until the mashed potato is smooth but fluffy. Set aside.

    Prepare the Cheese Sauce. In a thick bottom saucepan, combine the NESTLÉ® All Purpose Cream,NESTLÉ® Fresh Milk, and grated cheese. Cook over low heat and whisk until smooth and the grated cheese thoroughly melted. Set aside.

    To assemble, in a 9x13 baking pan or dish, place prepared vegetables on the first layer. Arrange the cooked meat on the 2nd layer and the mashed potato on the next. Top with the cheese sauce. Bake for 20 minutes in a 350°F oven covered with foil. Remove cover and brown top for 5-10 minutes or until cheese is bubbling.

TIPS:

  • Add grated cheese on top of the mashed potatoes before baking for an extra cheesy crust.
  • Substitute the meat with ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
  • Add a layer of cooked bacon or sauteed mushrooms for extra flavor.
  • Experiment with different herbs and spices to customize the taste to your liking.
